Parent Volunteer Information:
GV is a summer recreational swim team and volunteers are the lifeblood of the team. We cannot have a swim team or attend/run swim meets without them. Because we are such a small team and we all want to contribute to making this a fun atmosphere for our swimmers, at least one parent from each family will be required to volunteer at every swim in which they are participating. If we do not have enough volunteers for the Away meets, it puts an unnecessary burden on our host team to fill those positions and makes us look bad. If we do not have enough volunteers for our Home meets, we cannot run the meet and the kids will lose out on an opportunity for fun competition and it will jeopardize the standing of our team in our Division. Below are listed some common volunteer positions for swim meets along with their description. Many of these positions require multiple volunteers.
- Timer: handles the stopwatch to accurately time swimmers in their lane, handles the clipboard to record times and check swimmers in.
- Head Timer: handles multiple stopwatches and gives them to timers who may have not started their watch on time, collects the lane timer sheets.
- Runner: transports results from the results table to the posting area.
- Ribbons: receives labels from the results table and places them on the correct ribbons, organizes ribbons by swimmer for our team.
- Head Judge: verifies the results and approves them for announcing and posting (only supplied by the Visiting Team)
- Clerk of Course: helps get the swimmers organized in their heats and lanes and sends them up to the start area.
- Computer Operator: need to attend the PMSL clinic before the start of the season. Responsible for accurate data entry into the Meet Manager Software from the lane timer sheets, score the meet and print results and labels.
- Team Representative: Consulting with the Referee on any questions pertaining to the USA Swimming and League Rules, conduct of the meet or decisions of officials. Lodging protests involving turns, strokes and other technicalities within 30 minutes after the event has been recorded.
- Team Marshal: Policing the team area and making sure kids are staying in the team area except when going to Clerk of Course for their races, making sure there is no horseplay, unsafe behavior etc.
Becoming an Official
Just like volunteers are the lifeblood of the team so are Officials. Officials are parents who have been trained and certified in USA Swimming Rules and Regulations to ensure fair and equitable competition for all participants. Getting trained and certified is a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and support your athlete through active participation! (unlike many other sports, swimming is not a spectator sport!)
Positions include Referee, Starter, Stroke & Turn Judge, and Chief Judge. You must attend at least one clinic per position and pass a written test with 80% or better score prior to the start of the season. Certification is valid for 2 summer seasons. Stroke & Turn Judge is the entry level position while Referee, Starter, and Chief Judge are more advanced positions and require more experience. PMSL will provide free training (check the website under the Officials tab for clinic dates and training videos. We will also update this page once we have the clinic dates.
Team Gear Information
GV is a swim Team, not just simply a group of swimmers so it is very important every swimmer have the team suit and the team cap (for those with long hair). Just like every member of a soccer team should wear the same uniform, GV swimmers should wear their “uniform” at swim meets.
Greenview Gators Official Suit: Purchase here at the Suburban Aquatics Team Store at SwimOutlet.com. Free Shipping on orders over $49!
